The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

CP5580 crosses over on the approach to the Detroit - Windsor Tunnel.

The Train Sheds of the vacant Michigan Central Depot are off to the right. Not visible is the Building. This train entered the MC (Conrail) track at Delray from the CSX Mainline which continues on to the Riverfront.

Built by the Michigan Central and opened in 1910 it was originally opened as an electrified tunnel to avoid problems with ventilation. When Conrail sold the Canadian Southern in 1985 the tunnel was acquired jointly by Canadien National and Canadian Pacific. The CN mainline to Chicago runs from Port Huron which is where they built a new double stack tunnel. The north tube was rebored by CP and opened on April 19, 1994 providing clearance for high capacity rolling stock. Only some double stack containers are restricted. This effort resulted in a reported 30% increase in traffic through this facility. It also eventually put an end to the rail ferry business that began in 1867 with the last boat crossing in April 1994.
