Much Ballast work took place in the summer of 1997 on the Plymouth sub west of the diamond. The operation begins with the undercutter which cleans the ballast by scooping, sifting out the dirt and replacing it. After the undercutter is through fresh material is added to replace the volume lost in the cleaning. This is spread and then tamped under the ties. This ballast train spent much of the summer at the Plymouth yard. The 9706 tied down most evenings just west of the diamond. Here the CSX9705 is working just west of MP CH25 at the grade crossing of Sheldon Road.
